BurkleHagen is a Cleveland-based food photography studio known for their striking imagery and culinary storytelling. To help showcase their broader capabilities, they partnered with Secret to create two original publications: a zine on food preservation and a cheese-focused recipe book. Each project was designed to highlight the studio’s creative range and production expertise.
ARTFUL PRESERVATION
Secret collaborated with BurkleHagen to art direct and design a zine exploring a range of food preservation techniques—from fermenting and freezing to curing and canning. The layout moved fluidly between structured grids and expressive full-page spreads, mirroring the cadence and visual intrigue of the imagery itself.
MATERIALS TO MATCH
The zine was printed on uncoated stock to give the piece a tactile, approachable finish to feel both artful and accessible. The paper choice allowed the photography to be the center of attention while also reinforcing the editorial tone—refined, confident, and designed to invite repeated exploration.
CHEESE, PLEASE
Carrying forward the same editorial sensibility, the cheese recipe book pairs thoughtfully composed plated dishes with bold macro photography. The design is clean and intentional, focused on clarity, structure, and pace—giving the visuals space to lead while ensuring the overall experience felt elevated and easy to engage with.
